Cultural competence is an important aspect of all helping professions. Many different definitions exist for the term cultural competence. The nation’s diversity has important implications for treatment programs. The percentage of minority clients in substance abuse treatment is much greater that the percentage of minority treatment counselors. Cultural competence provides clients with more opportunities to access services that reflect their cultural perspectives. This course will provide an introduction to cultural competence and its definition.
Goals and Objectives
The goal of this course is to assist the reader in understanding the importance of cultural competence. This course will help participants gain the knowledge necessary to understand what it truly means to be “culturally competent”. Participants will develop ideas on how to properly establish a cultural competence process aimed towards achieving and maintaining cultural competence.
